Who wouldn't want to be friends with this group, I ask you?! |
I'm a fan of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".
In a huge way.
I love the 1992 film. I love the TV show. I love the comics. I would have loved the animated series, if it ever got off the ground. I'm still conflicted about "Angel"(which ended in '04, by the way), but I'm working through it and I certainly understand the appeal.
But the show is my jam. Seriously. If I could get a masters degree in Buffy, I would. And I'd be proud of it. If you're looking for something "Buffy" themed for Halloween, sink your teeth into the three holiday inspired episodes filmed during the run of the show.
Season 1: Halloween
This episode sets the tone for Halloween for the rest of the show. It is explained that Halloween is a slow night when it comes to vampires and evil forces in Sunnydale, CA. The creatures of the night find it too crass, apparently. But we should know that there's never a slow night in Sunnydale! After a visit to a new costume shop(owned by a mysterious stranger), nothing is as it seems. Personality-altering hijinks ensue for the Scooby gang and mistaken identity makes for a most interesting night! Out of the three Halloween themed episodes, this is probably my favorite. It's silly(SMG's accent? Seriously?) and lays the groundwork for two of the best relationships in the whole series. Do yourself a favor and check this one out!
Season 4: Fear Itself
Taking place during the first year of college for Buffy, Willow & Oz, this episode deals with the nature of fear. The gang agrees to attend a Haunted House hosted by a local frat, and as you can imagine, all hell breaks loose. This episode is funny, genuinely scary at points and has a great ending that you will not want to miss!
Season 6: All the Way (Episode promo begins at minute 3)
This episode, airing during the second-to-last season, deals with much heavier subject matter than the first two Halloween episodes. This feels like less of a stand-alone piece and fits much more nicely into the sixth season. We see all the members of the cast dealing with personal issues and problems, struggling to find balance, and the Halloween theme plays second fiddle to the emotions. While not my favorite of the three, this episode does have vampire jocks, Dawn's first kiss, Amber Tamblyn (of Joan of Arcadia fame) and many memorable one-liners. It certainly rounds out the Halloween trio nicely and typifies this season, with it's keen use of humor to balance out the sometimes stiflingly serious nature of this particular story arch. Definitely worth a watch!
With that I leave you to wonder why Joss Whedon ever ended this show. I know I would still be watching! Then again, I'd probably still be watching TGIF and SNICK if it was at all possible. Don't be like me.
Happy Monday, Scoobies!
