Carson Ellis is one of my favorite illustrators of all time. I was first introduced to her when I read the first book of the Wildwood Chronicles (a series for young adults) She has also illustrated The Mysterious Benedict Society, The Composer is Dead & Home, which she also wrote, in addition to several others. She's done work for The New York Times, Poetry Magazine & The New Yorker. Ellis, a Oregon based artist, is also married to the front man of The Decemberists, Colin Meloy.
Ellis' work is whimsical & engaging, but has a vein of darkness running through it, which I love! Her art is mood & accessible but also so well executed. I feel like Ellis' work is perfect for kids & adult, alike, who might not love really scary art (like
Emily Carroll, who I also love), but long for something a little darker than your average bear. You can find Carson Ellis on her
website,
tumblr &
Instagram. I highly recommend you check her out, especially during this spooky season!
