"Pushing Daisies" had a much shorter life than it deserved.
"Pushing Daisies", an ABC comedy which aired from 2007-2009, continues to make it into my top five favorite shows of all time even 4 years after being cancelled and only having two seasons. Brian Fuller, writer of Dead Like Me, Heroes and most recently, Hannibal, sure knows how to write a show that hooks you!
This show was brilliant. It was stylized, without seeming over-done. It was well-written, well-acted and well-voiced-over. It was whimsically morbid when most shows can't manage to be either of those, let alone both, successfully. Here's the premise:
The Pie Maker (Ned) can bring dead things back to life. But everything in this world comes at a cost.
The Pie Maker |
Ned meets up with Emerson Cod (A knitting detective) and the two get into cahoots together, solving mysteries using Ned's unique "gift".
The Knitting Detective |
Everything goes smoothly until Ned's childhood crush, Charlotte Charles (Chuck), becomes involved with one of the aforementioned mysteries. Then things really get interesting.
Lonely Tourist, Charlotte Charles |
While not directly Halloween themed, this show does have a rather dark premise, made lighter with quirky execution and style. "Pushing Daisies" truly had everything; love, adventure, morbid hilarity, baking, beekeeping, Paul Rubens, Kristin Chenoweth in arguably her best role ever and so much more. If you have never seen it, I urge you to check both seasons out from your local library. I challenge you to not blow through it in a weekend. It's just that good! And if you have seen it, watch it again this Halloween season. Guaranteed to give your holiday the shot of whimsy and style it's been missing!
